The scholarship programme for foreign postgraduates and academics of the Hanns Seidel Foundation provides assistance to young scientists and postgraduates (primarily from developing countries) to undergo professional and scientific training at universities, universities of applied sciences and other scientific institutions in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Since the inception of the programme in 1981, assistance has been provided to more than 2,084 scholars from 62 countries. Every year, nearly 100 academics complete the programme for foreign postgraduates.

The stay in Germany and the experiences that it entails are intended to enable foreign scholars to play an active part in positions of responsibility in their home countries‘ economic, technological, social and political development, and to contribute actively to mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.

The Hanns Seidel Foundation, in cooperation with local partner organisations, carries out the pre-selection of candidates eligible for a scholarship in South Africa.

Funding is granted for a period of five months up to a maximum of two years, depending on the respective project.

  • Must have a university degree with excellent results;
  • Must be younger than 32 years of age;
  • Must have proven knowledge of the German language;
  • Must be able to demonstrate competence and experience in the field of independent research work;
  • Must be able to prove socio-political commitment.
