Discussing ISS research in Brussels
Africa's Energy Future

What does Africa’s energy future look like, which implications does this have for Europe, and what forms of cooperation do we need? We discussed these and other questions at an event we co-hosted with the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies in Brussels this week.

Africa’s rapidly growing population and demand for energy implies big changes in the future. The African continent will become a major global carbon emitter if the current fossil fuel-dependent trajectory prevails. Europe can support the expansion of renewable energy and sustainable development through investment, knowledge transfer, partnerships and initiatives such as Global Gateway. Besides, the EU has its own interests in Africa. Increased cooperation not only contributes to climate protection but also promotes economic stability and creates long-term prospects for both regions.

In his presentation, Dr Jakkie Cilliers, Head, African Futures & Innovation at the Institute for Security Studies, introduced key insights from his team's recent research just published in new reports on the Future of Energy and Climate in Africa.

What are the different future scenarios for Africa with regard to energy and climate? What do these developments mean for Europe, and how can the EU-Africa partnership be mutually beneficial?

These were just some of the questions raised in the engaging discussion facilitated by Tomi Huhtanen, Executive Director, Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies.
