Sharing insights in challenges and progress

At this event co-hosted with our partner team from the Catholic Parliamentary Liaison Office in Cape Town, the National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi and the Deputy NDPP for Strategy, Operations and Compliance Anton du Plessis gave brief presentations. They provided an overview of the nature and extent of crime in South Africa today, including corruption and organised crime, and what needs to be done to respond more effectively.

Participants in the active discussion agreed: securing the rule of law is key for positive development in the country. The National Prosecuting Authority and all criminal justice system elements, especially the SA Police Service, are responsible, as is civil society and the private sector. „We have to climb that mountain together“, said the NDPP.

Efforts from whole society needed to secure the rule of law

We were grateful to the team from the Catholic Parliamentary Liaison Office, its Director Peter-John Pearson and Bishop Victor Phalana for convening together with us. The churches and religious institutions are playing a crucial role in informing us about the role of values, and the meaning and importance of the rule of law.
