Africa represents both dynamic growth and increasing security challenges. During the side event with our African partner organization, the Institute for Security Studies, decision-makers will discuss how conflicts, geopolitical competition, and new security collaborations are shaping the continent's future. The conversation is not only how to reduce conflict, but how to do so in a way that strengthens governance, protects democracy, and unlocks development: honestly, pragmatically, and together.

• If external assistance is declining, is Africa entering an era where it must largely secure itself?

• How do Africans pursue security without hollowing out democracy?

• How do governments invest in the military and professional law enforcement when citizens are demanding schools, jobs, and healthcare?

• What does it actually mean when partnerships come with competing interests, technologies, and norms?

• Which external partnerships are genuinely aligned with Africa’s priorities, rather than using African insecurity as a proxy battlefield?

Speakers:

  • Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, Francophonie and Congolese Diaspora of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
  • Dr Leon Schreiber, Minister of Home Affairs, Republic of South Africa
  • Dr Jakkie Cilliers, Chairperson of the Board, Head of African Futures & Innovation, Institute for Security Studies (ISS)
