Visiting Robben Island and spending time in Khayelitsha
Dr Markus Söder arrives in Cape Town

On arrival in Cape Town, Bavarian Minister-President Dr. Markus Söder and his delegation experienced a moving visit to Robben Island with MEC Ricardo Mackenzie. They paid tribute to Madiba, Nelson Mandela, and all those who suffered under Apartheid and struggled against it in South Africa. In the afternoon, they travelled to Khayelitsha.

On Sunday afternoon, Markus Söder and the Bavarian delegation came to Khayelitsha - to the Monwabisi Park Neighbourhood Centre and its Soccer Field, where young people were enjoying training and playing in the afternoon sun.

Together with MECs Mireille Wenger and Deidré Baartman and German Consul General in Cape Town, Tanja Werheit, they were keen to learn from the team of “Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrades” (VPUU), from community members and the young soccer players there about their lives and activities.

We were honoured to accompany the delegation in Khayelitsha - and we are grateful for the longstanding support from Bavaria for our local partnership projects with a strategic focus on human safety, inclusive economic development and work with children and young people.
