Discussion on important focus topic
Launching new report on firearm crime

Illegal possession of firearms is a key driver of crime in South Africa. At the launch of a new Policy Brief by our Justice and Violence Prevention partner team in the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, presenters shared important information, analysis and policy recommendations and discussed them with the audience.

The concerning statistics outlined in the report.

ISS

This seminar discussed the scale and impact of firearm crime and how to strengthen the response by police and other institutions. A new Institute for Security Studies (ISS) policy brief on mapping firearm crimes was introduced by the author David Bruce, a Policing Expert in the ISS, followed by very informative inputs from the other panelists:

  • Major General Norman Sekhukune, Crime Registrar, SAPS
  • Jenni Irish-Qhobosheane, Researcher, Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime
  • Dr Freddy Hlungwani, Deputy Director, Gauteng Department of Community Safety

“Every instance where a firearm is used to commit an offence or is used unlawfully, regardless of death or injury, must be treated as a serious priority“, the seminar participants agreed. Therefore, law enforcement agencies are encouraged to find a joint, focused approach to fight illicit possession and use of firearms.

The very engaging discussion with the audience in Pretoria and online was facilitated by Dhiya Matai, a Consultant at the ISS.
