Training Municipal Middle Managers
Mentoring and Coaching Program
For over a decade, the Western Cape Department of Local Government in South Africa and the Hanns Seidel Foundation have been implementing innovative programs to tackle key challenges at the local government level, with support from the Free State of Bavaria, a long-term partner of the Western Cape.
While previous efforts focused primarily on training middle managers in consequence management, ethical leadership, and procurement legislation, the focus has now shifted to transferring skills from experienced colleagues to younger ones in municipalities.
Over the last few weeks, eighty Western Cape municipal middle managers participated in a 3-day accredited Mentoring & Coaching program jointly executed by the Stellenbosch University School of Public Leadership and the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
The interactive sessions had been conceptualised for this specific purpose.
They are now equipped to review local government structures and processes, understand leadership styles, master mentoring and coaching techniques, and apply them to build cohesive, high-performing teams in the municipal context.
Over the next three months, each of the middle managers will mentor three younger colleagues in their municipalities, applying their newly acquired knowledge and reflecting on their skills to foster positive individual and organizational change at the municipal level.
