A workshop in Pretoria
Working to achieve evidence based policing

Our partners at the Justice and Violence Prevention Program in the ISS Pretoria convened a special workshop on Evidence Based Policing recently.

Partnerships are key to using best practice approaches

The room was filled with leading representatives from think tanks, universities, the South African Police Service and the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service, as well as renowned independent experts. There was consensus that we need genuine collaborations and true commitment from all those involved to make evidence based policing happen – urgently.

Speaking from experience

In very productive discussions, the participants from diverse backgrounds exchanged experience and ideas for future collaboration in genuine partnerships. The very practical, thoughtful approach and the commitment palpable were truly encouraging, which was expressed by many of the speakers as well.

Ongoing work and publications

A similar roundtable took place in Cape Town as well. Next steps are now being taken - to engage further and to implement tangible cooperations very soon.

Read a recent publication co-authored by Gareth Newham, the head of the ISS project with an expert from the university of Exeter, UK, in the “Crime Quarterly” on this subject:

A new, concise article by Andrew Faull, senior researcher in the ISS project, just appeared in the Daily Maverick as well:
