The participants of the 2-week school just concluded, representatives from Public Service, Academia and Civil Society, had been chosen from hundreds of applicants.

“Giving effect to the African Charter on Values and Principles of Decentralisation, Local Governance and Local Development” - this was the theme of this year's school. The annual event, organised in Partnership with the Centre for Federalism and Governance Studies at the College of Law, Addis Ababa University, alternates between Cape Town and Addis Ababa.

“This African School on Decentralisation will groom activists for decentralisation who speak truths and facts” said Sithole Mbanga, CEO of the South African Local Government Association, in his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the school.

Renowned lecturers, leading experts from Africa and beyond, have since been teaching an intense course on diverse, practice relevant topics. Interactive classes offered ample opportunities to exchange experience from different countries and sectors and jointly reflect on questions, using interdisciplinary approaches.

Feedback from the participants confirmed the value of the unique school, which they enjoyed as well; they look forward to applying the insights gained.
