Decentralisation and Development

During the 2 week School, leading experts and practitioners from the continent and beyond were teaching and facilitating interactive, practice focussed sessions with participants from public service, academia and civil society from 25 African countries.

In future, the School will be held annually, alternating between Cape Town and Addis Ababa as host cities. This year's Inaugural school, focussing on "Decentralisation and Development", was held online, and it received enthusiastic feedback from participants and lecturers.

The Annual African School on Decentralisation (ASD) was also conceptualised drawing on experience of the international Federalism Days in Germany which have been facilitated by the Hanns Seidel Foundation for a number of years.

The School aims to create a platform for knowledge-sharing on decentralization in Africa, thus contributing towards increased knowledge, research outputs as well as innovation and the promotion of good governance.

The school partners with institutions from different countries, also to locate the African decentralization experience within the global discourse of decentralisation.
