Participants discussed relevant case examples from current SA reality, engaged in thoughtful, passionate, fact based debates and practiced facilitation of group work. Three great Train-the-Trainer workshops have just been held online by Streetlaw South Africa this month - using practical Manuals, with lots of real life example exercises, written by the team and published locally for this purpose. „Democracy for All“ workshops follow a very interactive, creative methodology, with students also taking turns in facilitating sessions - aiming for them to hold workshops themselves in the near future.
It's been enlightening and encouraging to experience the participants' serious debates with well-founded arguments, independent thinking and nuanced approaches on questions of legal rights and developments in South African society. Many young people want to get actively involved and are seeking productive ways to make a difference in their country.
The workshops also use Civics Academy educational videos: https://www.civicsacademy.co.za
Quizes on the videos are conducted online, and students are invited to give feedback on them as well.
Lots of positive feedback was received, where participants express appreciation, a better understanding for their individual and generational potential, and a willingness to become more actively involved in democratic practices themselves. They voice the need for civic education to be part of curricula in schools and institutions of higher learning.
Students emphasised what they learnt and how much they enjoyed the online workshops - and called for more similar civic education opportunities to understand and debate topics of democracy and active citizenship, in safe spaces.
Participants and partner institutions involved expressed their appreciation to the facilitators and all Street Law team members who apply themselves wholeheartedly to this project.
