Panel discussion with international experts
Global lessons on migration policy

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration is expected to be adopted in Marrakech, Morocco, during a large international gathering in December 2018. It represents the first attempt to set a worldwide agenda on this complex topic which, in many places, has become increasingly contested and highly politicised in ways that give reason for concern.

Renowned experts provide perspectives from three continents

Ahead of this important upcoming event, our partners from the Institute for Security Studies Pretoria held a public panel discussion this week, "Global lessons on migration policy", to discuss regional perspectives from three continents on migration. The experienced panelists included Prof Jorge Schiavon, an expert on US-Mexico and Central America migration, Dr Melanie Müller, researcher, Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) from Berlin, and Katembo Tasakana, migration expert and analyst, and Channel Africa Swahili Radio Station producer and presenter.

Wide-ranging Q & A with large audience

The experts' contributions explored similarities and differences in the approaches to migration in Africa, Europe and America. They covered both voluntary and forced migration, and they also spoke to questions of government policies, xenophobia and the role of migration in sustainable development.  The large audience in the seminar room at the ISS participated in a very lively debate which was facilitated by Ottilia Maunganidze, Head of Special Projects at the ISS.
