Happy to let other people run your life for you?

This is the title of an Opinion piece article drafted by Mike Pothier (CPLO) and Marlene Barnard (HSF) and just published by News24 which reflects on the many good reasons for participating in elections - with a focus on the upcoming National and Provincial elections in South Africa.

The introduction of the article says:

"You choose what clothes you’re going to wear for the day, and what you’re going to eat for lunch. You think carefully about how to make your money stretch at the supermarket. If you can afford to go on holiday, or to buy a new car, or to go to university, you carefully consider the various choices open to you. Of course – it’s your life, so you make the decisions. So why, when it comes to politics, do so many of us let other people make our choices for us?"

In their easy-to-read, concise text, the authors provide a wealth of good reasons to participate in elections - they argue citizens should consider them well and decide to exercise their democratic right to vote after all, in their own interest, and that of the country.
