Both the European Union and the USA are recalibrating their policies with Africa. Rebuilding relationships will require patience, persistence, and an openness to break from past practices. US President Biden, German Chancellor Merkel, and French President Macron underlined during the recent Munich Security Conference the importance of a sustainable partnership with Africa. Chancellor Merkel suggested that: “(...) the relationship with Africa is of strategic importance and should also play an important role in the transatlantic partnership”. Various concepts and approaches are under discussion on both sides of the Atlantic. What does this mean for the African Union and her member states? To what extent do the new policies towards Africa create challenges and opportunities for collaboration? What are current African priorities and how do they match with US and EU current strategies?
