The project was conceptualized jointly with economist and business leader Miriam Altman who is a commissioner on the National Planning Commission of South Africa as well and is actively involved in the project as a patron still.

On Enke's website, YANDISA gets explained further:

Yandisa” is an IsiXhosa word that means “to expand or enlarge”, aptly capturing the vision for a leadership development experience that expands South African youths’ capacity to lead sustainable school improvement"

YANDISA supports young people in their quest to improve their schools' success via concrete projects the learners themselves are implementing, in collaboration with the New Leaders Foundation. A weekend retreat for about 100 participants was followed by 32 workshops in four schools.

Learners started initiatives such as additional lessons held by older high school pupils for younger ones regularly in the afternoons. They are accompanied by experienced Enke facilitators who come to their schools for regular sessions.

Learners in a workshop we participated in expressed appreciation for the opportunities they experienced in the project - and often voiced that, once it concludes for their class, they wish to volunteer in other initiatives.
