Strengthening cooperation to reduce violent crime in the Western Cape

Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) Resident Representative Hanns Bühler met with the new Western Cape Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Sizakhele William Dyantyi, to discuss cooperation between SAPS and civil society in strengthening safety and security, as well as ongoing joint efforts to curb violent crime in identified hotspots.

HSF

HSF currently supports a joint initiative of the Western Cape Government, the City of Cape Town and SAPS, implemented in cooperation with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), to strengthen evidence-based approaches to reducing violent crime in high-crime areas.

Pilot initiatives have demonstrated that the targeted deployment of uniformed police patrols, guided by systematic crime analysis, can contribute to reducing serious crime in violence hotspots when implemented consistently.

The meeting with Provincial Commissioner Dyantyi also focused on how this data-led approach to hotspot policing can be further refined and strengthened, and how cooperation between the participating institutions can support its sustainable implementation.

Effective policing requires not only resources, but also reliable data, sound analysis, targeted deployment and strong institutional cooperation.
