Like all other regions, Africa must transition rapidly to non-fossil fuels, become more energy efficient, and reduce carbon emissions; this report recommends key policies. Apart from renewables, nuclear energy, more hydro and energy storage will be required. To meet its growing energy demand, Africa needs more time to phase out gas and room to exploit its gas endowment. Land and forest management can facilitate carbon mitigation. Africa should lever opportunities of beneficiation and manufacturing towards a low carbon economy. A differentiated carbon tax should fund Africa's energy transition. Models suggested to facilitate financial support include Debt-for-nature or -climate swaps.
